Jonathan Bloom, Food Waste Author & Advocate Coming to Fargo-Moorhead

At Ugly Food, we have a small list of food waste gurus - thought leaders around the world who provide us inspiration on the issue of food sustainability. This February, we are thrilled to welcome one of those brilliant minds to Fargo-Moorhead. Join Ugly Food of the North on Monday, Feb. 20 for a special community potluck featuring Jonathan Bloom, author of American Wasteland and a prominent national voice in the end-food-waste movement.

In 2005, Bloom was conducting research by volunteering at the DC Central Kitchen, a homeless shelter that rescues unused food from restaurants and supermarkets. When he saw the amount of food being wasted, he began advocating on issues of food waste, including the process of gleaning, or collecting crops that would otherwise be left in a field and redistributing them to the hungry.

We’re excited to announce Bloom’s involvement with our community potluck Monday, Feb. 20 at Drekker Brewing Company. [Get more info + RSVP on Facebook]

The informal event will feature updates from area leaders working on issues of waste and hunger, as well as ways for community members to get involved and support these initiatives. Bloom will share his thoughts on how Fargo-Moorhead can collaborate to accelerate progress.

Excited for his visit? Us too! Here are some ways to show your excitement:

  1. Read American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (And What We Can Do About It)

  2. Check out Bloom’s Blog Wasted Food for insight efforts to reduce waste and hunger.

  3. Learn more about gleaning and look for future community meetups to discuss forming a gleaning network in our area.

  4. Volunteer at the Great Plains Food Bank to gain a better sense for how charitable feeding works and why it matters in our community.

  5. Share our community potluck event on social media and encourage others to get involved using #FMUglyFood. [Please note: this event is 21+]

** Save the date for Jonathan Bloom's public lecture at Concordia College on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. (Centrum). All ages welcomed **
